Barangay Ginebra San Miguel will test the mettle of the league’s newest team GlobalPort on opening day of the new season of the PBA.

The match, set at 6 p.m. after the league’s opening ceremonies at 4 p.m., will mark the first time fans will see Mark Caguioa in action since winning his Most Valuable Player trophy, as well as the debut of newly-acquired LA Tenorio for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Coach Siot Tanquingcen said he’s wary of the opening assignment for his wards.

“All I know is GlobalPort is a new team, but I’m sure they’re going to prove something,” he said.

GlobalPort will be bannered by Gary David, the reigning Philippine Cup Best Player, and two-time MVP Willie Miller.

“What more can you ask for? Playing against crowd favorite Barangay Ginebra, that is truly the warmest welcome we could get,” said GlobalPort team manager BJ Manalo.

The match will also be a showcase of rookies from both squads. First-round choices Chris Ellis and Keith Jensen are expected to inject a dose of athleticism and energy into Ginebra. Vic Manuel, Jason Deutchman, and AJ Mandani, meanwhile, could see action for the Batang Pier squad still looking for an identity.

Before hostilities start, fans will be treated to lavish opening ceremonies to mark the occasion.

AKTV will feature state-of-the-art video-imaging technology for the program, which would also feature the traditional parade of muses led by Anne Curtis, Isabelle Daza, Georgina Wilson, the girls from TV5′s Artista Academy, and Alice Dixson.

The PBA will also honor members of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, which won the 34th William Jones Cup last month and placed fourth in the FIBA Asia Cup.
