This time, Mac Cardona made sure their won’t be a meltdown against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
Grounded previously in their out-of-town game last season, Mac Cardona played a steady game on Saturday in Digos, Davao del Sur, scoring 21 points while his backcourt mate Sol Mercado produced 19 as the Meralco Bolts jolted the Gin Kings, 95-88, on Saturday.
“It was really a great game and a great victory, especially because it’s against Ginebra,” said Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio.
Three other players also contributed in double figures.
Mark Borboran, still not in tip-top condition recuperating from a previous injury, chipped in 15 markers, a performance which caught the fancy of his young outspoken mentor.
“He’s still playing hurt but he kept us in the game in the third period,” said Gregorio.
Borboran had two triples in the third which enabled the Bolts to keep the Kings at bay.
Rookie Cliff Hodge, who surprisingly led his team in scoring in the first two games, had another steady game with 13 markers while Ronjay Buenafe added 10 for the Bolts, who came back from deficits of as much as 16 points in the second period.
“Overall, it was great effort by the team. Everybody did their roles. They played with a lot of intensity. We were down in the first half but they did not give up. It’s still a long way to go,” said Gregorio. (RJ)
