LA Tenorio has gone on a roll with Barangay Ginebra, striking with dish-outs versus Globalport in the season opener and himself delivering the buckets against Rain or Shine Sunday.

Tenorio scored five of his 20 points in the last two minutes of play and Ginebra beat out Rain or Shine in a tight seesawing battle, pulling off a 98-94 win for the early solo lead in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Mark Caguioa, Rico Maierhofer and Kerby Raymundo also stepped up as the Kings came through with a follow-up to their 110-90 win over the Batang Pier during the season inaugurals.

“It’s a very good win. As I’d said it would be interesting to see how we fare against one of the tough teams in the league,” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen.

“You can see that they’re very fluid. Ang ganda na ng flow ng laro nila samantalang kame eh nasa getting-to-know-you stage pa. But somehow, nakasabay kami sa kanila,” Tanquingcen also said.

Tenorio, Caguioa, Maierhofer and Raymundo held the fort for the Kings as they outlasted the Elasto Painters in a battle marked by 15 deadlocks and 13 lead changes.

Tenorio stood out in the end with his clutch plays that won it for Ginebra.

Jeff Chan led all scorers with 25 points but failed to bail their team out of trouble.

The Elasto Painters, the Governors Cup title holders, eventually dropped the game as Chan missed a three-point attempt with seven seconds left and their team trailing, 94-97.

The Kings took that lead on five straight points by Tenorio.

Rain or Shine had its last taste of the lead at 94-93 as Gabe Norwood soared high to put in a missed jumper by Larry Rodriguez with time down to 51.6 seconds.

Tenorio countered by breaking down Rain or Shine’s defense and striking inside.

And he himself made it a three-point lead for the Kings on two free throws following a missed drive by Norwood.

The former Ateneo stalwart, the biggest hero of Smart Gilas in its recent Jones Cup title conquest, scattered 12 points in the first half before adding three in the third and five in the fourth.

Caguioa led the team with 22 while Maierhofer and Raymundo added 12 apiece. (SB)
