GlobalPort: Strategy, not disciplinary sanction, reason for Al-Hussaini’s benching

GlobalPort management dismissed speculation that Rabeh Al-Hussaini was benched against the Air 21 Express as a disciplinary measure against the player, who had a verbal altercation with veteran shooting guard Gary David during the Batang Pier’s debut game last week.

“It was situational,” GlobalPort team manager BJ Manalo told InterAKTV. “He was not used because we have a game plan and that is to use Jason Deutchman as our starting center because we want to draw the big men of Air 21 outside.”

“But we’re preparing something bigger for him and by next game we expect to use him. We also expect to see him on Friday.”

Although he was benched, Manalo clarified that the team had no plans to trade Al-Hussaini.

“Lahat ng nasa locker room naming, kailangan namin, including Rabeh,” said Manalo, who said verbal altercations between teammates are part of teh game.

“Mas gusto ko na yung ganung nagkakaroon ng konting disagreement, kaysa naman sa nagkamali na, wala pa ring sinasabi,” said Manalo.

“But they’re professionals and everyone is passionate to win, just like our team owner.”

Team management and coaching staff had a lengthy meeting after the team absorbed its second straight loss.

“Ayaw na naming patagalin pa. We could do it Tuesday, pero mas magandang gawin na naming ngayon habang fresh pa,” said Manalo. “Our first loss was really unacceptable. Losing is part of the game, but for you going there without fighting, that’s a different story. Tonight’s game was more satisfactory, but we’re not stopping from learning.”
